Opposition of Mars

2003 is a special year; the red planet will be at opposition to the sun which will bring it closer to the Earth than any time in thousands of years. In fact Mars will be only 55,758,006 km from the Earth and not due to come this close until the year 2287. Not only that, Mars may have come closer to Earth about 73,000 years ago than it does this year on August 27th.
The astronomical society of victoria (which I’m a member of) will be running several sessions during late July- August to showcase this event - in any case, I’ll be watching; this will be the best opportunity to view the red planet so join me around that time for a truly unforgettable experience…
