Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
Now, why would anyone need so many Linux machines networked together? For the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of course! With the RHIC, physicists study what the universe may have looked like in the first few moments after its birth in an enormous explosion we call the ‘Big Bang’. The RHIC drives two beams of gold ions around a 2.4 mile ring tube at speeds near the speed of light, and then forcing them into a subatomic collision which produces temperatures over a trillion degrees! Do read the RHIC fascinating facts; you’ll be fascinated!
