Thanks a billion

Billion 7402G

I got the Billion 7402G wireless ADSL modem delivered today; I’ve wanted for some time now to upgrade from the shitty modem Bigpond provides to a fully featured wireless product. This one does it all: ADSL2/2+, 802.11g with WPA, QoS, VPN with 3DES acceleration, SPI firewall, 4 port router, you name it. Price was fairly decent ($259) from warcom.com.au and service was prompt and efficient. Now what do I do with this thing? I haven’t got any wireless devices! :)

Wind of change

It’s time I change ISPs; especially now that ADSL2 is in the works (and most ISPs provide 1.5Mb ADSL connections for what I pay for 512Kb). As per usual, Telstra will take it’s time to upgrade the hardware, and charge through the nose for a mediocre service at best (I also realised they count my upload data towards the monthly limit; that’s just not on…).

I’m looking at Internode - they rate very well and have a no-bullshit approach. There’s no off-peak/on-peak times, the plans are very competitive and they also have their own private national backbone network (you still use Telstra’s hardware at the exchange but it’s Internode’s lines after that). It’s all too good.

MS Groove and Ray

The news are everywhere; Microsoft acquires Groove and Ray Ozzie becomes the CTO! Damien Katz has some predictions… What’s MS going to do with Groove? (apart from re-branding it to MS Groove Server 2006 or something). Is this their winning ticket to collaboration? time will tell….

Cool XUL

This has to be the best XUL example I’ve seen so far… (Firefox only). Some more examples here. Will XUL really take off?

Where it’s at

I’ve been flooded with work the past 2 weeks - and so much is happening in the IBM/Lotus space at the moment. Lotus Notes/Domino is undergoing tremendous change and IBM seems to have a good handle on things now (unlike a couple of years back). The Workplace branding is a bit like the unified theory of everything (at least for messaging and collaboration) so all of us ‘Loti’ are eager to explore new technologies (hey, as long as it’s kewl like Notes & Domino). The Lotus INsight forum day gave us plenty to think about for sure…

So what else have I done? I started a flickr account (is this a good thing? now you can see what I look like!) It’s only a couple of photos but I’ll put some more up soon.

BTW, I’ve still got some Gmail invites left, so if you want one please let me know.
